Oxford Road Collapse

Oxford Road has collapsed between Rosebank and Killarney.

And so obviously is closed to traffic.

“As the road collapsed, it took with it all light posts and part of an office park wall. Water is now gushing from the depression - turning the hole into a muddy pool. However, Gauteng officials say a tunnel that’s being constructed underneath the road didn't collapse. Instead they say the incident may have been caused by unstable ground… No one was injured in the incident.

The cave-in comes as Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa is in the UK for the unveiling of the first of the Gautrain's coaches. The Premier says the rapid rail link will be the most beautiful train in the world”.

“A section of Oxford Road collapsed between 8th Avenue and North Road on Tuesday, Johannesburg metro police said. Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the road collapse occurred around 1.30pm. He could not confirm whether it had collapsed into the Gautrain construction tunnels being built below the road. Motorists were being diverted onto 11th Avenue and Riviera Road. Minnaar said he had not received any reports of injuries. - Sapa

I haven’t actually seen any of this… yet. Gonna be a FUN drive home this evening. Anyone have any better news? Or photos!

And does anyone know how long it takes and how easy it is to “put back a road”?!!!

Joys.

Well I think all the kings horses and all the kings men are gonna try, but jeepers, if they can't even anticipate a major collapse like this, I'd say we need to watch where we're driving. Quite lucky no one was killed in this.
